Freshman Shelby Basso grabs spotlight in Basic’s senior night with shutout

In a game that Basic intended to honor its softball team’s past, the future shined bright.

Freshman Shelby Basso stole the show on senior night, spinning a five-hit shutout to give Basic a 3-0 home victory over Foothill on Monday.

“It is very ironic, but whatever gets the job done,” Basso said. “I love my defense and offense for coming up and putting some runs on the board. That’s all I needed to keep a game.”

Basso rolled through the first six innings, surrendering just three hits and not allowing a runner to reach third base. She ran into some trouble in the seventh, allowing a two-out double with a runner on, but she induced a groundout to earn her first shutout of the season, and Basic’s fourth.

“She shows up every single game with the intention of being the absolute best pitcher that we have,” Basic coach Lauren Taylor said. “She’s turning heads. She’s a freshman and she is just dominating some of these big teams, and I was telling her the other day I cannot wait to see her as a senior.”

Basso added an RBI, driving a sacrifice fly deep into foul territory in left in the first inning. It capped an inning that saw leadoff hitter Izabelle Morales reach on an error and score on a double by sophomore Sanoe Helenihi, who scored on Basso’s sacrifice fly.

The Wolves (16-15, 10-8 Sunrise League) pushed another across in the fourth inning. Junior Hannah Barr singled, advanced to second on a bunt and scored on Morales’ single.

The Wolves’ three runs were the fewest in a victory all season.

“There’s one thing that we can do well, and that’s hit,” Taylor said. “Today we were crushing it and creaming it, just right at them.”

Helenihi went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored, the only Basic player with multiple hits.

Kayla King went 2-for-3 for the Falcons (13-16, 10-7), and Katelyn Enzweiler and Sadie Christian each doubled.

The victory had a bit of a revenge feel for the Wolves, who dropped a 13-9 decision on Apr. 1 to Foothill. The losing pitcher in that game – Basso, who allowed six runs in five relief innings.

“For our rivals, for them coming back getting us last time, it feels great putting it back on them,” Basso said. “See how they like it.”
