RECRUITING: Gorman transfer Barkley commits to Arkansas

Bishop Gorman junior wide receiver Maleek Barkley made an oral commitment to Arkansas on Sunday night, announcing his decision on Twitter.

Barkley’s commitment is nonbinding, and the first day he can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 1. Arkansas’ coaches cannot comment until that time.

Barkley transferred to Gorman in February after playing at Lake Travis High in Austin, Texas. The versatile, 6-foot, 185-pounder was an all-district selection as a kick returner this past season, and he ranked second on the team in receptions (55) and third in rushing yards (617).

Barkley took over at running back after the Cavaliers’ starter was lost to a season-ending knee injury on Oct. 23 and helped Lake Travis reach the Texas Class 6A Division II championship game. In six postseason games, he rushed for 469 yards, caught 21 passes for 310 yards and had 10 total touchdowns.

Barkley is rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com.

Barkley, who is scheduled to make an unofficial visit to Arkansas next weekend, is the Razorbacks’ fourth commitment for the class of 2017. He chose Arkansas over scholarship offers from Illinois, Texas State and UNLV.
