VOLLEYBALL: Cunningham, Gorman top Foothill for final state berth

Vashti Cunningham had 14 kills Monday, and Bishop Gorman's girls volleyball team rallied for a 24-26, 25-21, 25-14, 25-16 victory over Foothill at Chaparral to earn the final berth in the Division I state tournament.

Cunningham had five kills in the third set to help the Gaels (27-14) take control of the match.

Sydney Lobato added four kills, 21 assists, three blocks and five aces for Gorman, which plays Sunrise Region champ Coronado (29-10) in the state semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday at Coronado.

Sunset champ Shadow Ridge (27-12) plays Northern champ Bishop Manogue (34-6) in the other semifinal at 6:10 p.m.

Abbey Archambault added eight kills and three blocks, including a block on match point to seal the win for the Gaels.

Tessa Michalosky led Foothill with 11 kills and two blocks. Courtney Nilson added eight blocks, and teammate Kiley McCall had 31 assists and three blocks for the Falcons.

Foothill struggled receiving serve in the third set. Gorman had seven aces in the set, including four straight by Lobato for the set's first four points.

The Falcons also helped Gorman with nine service errors in the final two sets.
