GIRLS TRACK: Coronado captures crown at Valley Relays


Coronado’s girls track and field team won two relays, and the Cougars went on to capture the team title at the Valley Relays on Saturday at Valley High.

The Cougars’ quartet of Spencer Farr, Sabrina Granger, Caitlin Shannon and Ellen Wise crossed first in the 3,200 relay in a time of 10 minutes, 58.55 seconds. Wise teamed with Sara Moon, Claire Rawlins and Bonnie Stewart to win the 6,400 relay (24:33.87).

Coronado finished with 118.95 points, followed by Las Vegas at 96.95. Canyon Springs was third at 64.98.

Coronado’s Lauren Vermeys was first in the high jump at 4 feet, 11 inches. Mina Poniewaz won the pole vault (9-6) and Talia Sapp won the triple jump (33-0) for Coronado.

Canyon Springs won the 400 relay (50.39), the 800 relay (1:47.51) and the shuttle hurdles relay (1:07.71). Alexis Mathis was first in the 300 hurdles (48.51), and Iyani Hayden won the long jump (17-2) for the Pioneers.

Las Vegas’ Cjenna Heiden was first in the shot put (36-6).

Area athletes excel in California

At Arcadia, California, Silverado’s Micayla Kelley won the triple jump with an outstanding mark of 40-0½ in the afternoon meet at the Arcadia Invitational.

Kelley’s leap places her in the top 20 nationally, according to rankings at Athletic.net.

Liberty’s Gabby Carson cleared 12-6 to win the pole vault by four inches over Kelly Kern of Carondelet (California), and Rancho’s 1,600 relay team crossed first in 3:51.36.

Centennial’s Talie Bonds took sixth in the 300 hurdles (45.12), while Green Valley’s Deborah Grant was seventh in the 400 (57.05), setting a school sophomore record in the process.
