Arbor View’s girls soccer team cracks national rankings

Arbor View’s girls soccer team, which has won four consecutive state championships, will enter the 2016 season with some lofty outside expectations.

The Aggies were recognized nationally last week, when they were named the No. 21 team in the country in USA Today’s Super 25 preseason rankings.

“Obviously, it’s a huge compliment to the program as a whole,” Arbor View coach Jay Howard said. “With the kids before and the current kids we have. We were really excited when we saw it. It was quite the compliment. The kids work hard, so it was exciting for them.”

Arbor View went 21-1-1 last season, including an 8-0 mark in Northwest League play, and closed out the season with 17 consecutive wins. The Aggies topped Coronado 2-0 in the Division I state final at North Valleys High in Reno.

The Aggies lost to the Cougars earlier in the year in the Las Vegas Kick-Off, and tied Green Valley in that same tournament.

Howard believes this season’s team will be even more competitive with all the experience.

“We approach everything as a new year, but we do have nine returning starters, assuming everyone is healthy,” Howard said. “We’re definitely going to be competitive. …

“I’m excited for them. Last year was kind of a new team, mainly with sophomores. The core of our girls this year will be juniors. I really like our group and team chemistry.”

Colts Neck High (New Jersey), which finished 23-0-1 last season, came in at No. 1.

No other schools from Nevada made the girls or boys list.
