ARBOR VIEW

Head coach: Jay Howard, 10th season

2013 record: 16-1-4 (8-0-2 Northwest, first)

Returning letter winners (starters): Nine (seven)

Top athletes: F Breanna Larkin (Sr.), D Kendra Wallace (Sr.), MF Jessica Longhurst (Sr.), F Vanessa Lourenco (Sr.), D Madison Boyd (So.), MF Katelyn Laurente (Jr.), MF/F Haley Vicente (Sr.)

Outlook: The two-time defending state champions bring back seven starters, including a pair of offensive weapons in Larkin (16 goals, eight assists) and Lourenco (11 goals, seven assists).

Boyd and Kendra Wallace will help anchor a defense that posted 17 shutouts last year, but lost its goalkeeper to graduation.

“Kylee Wallace will be replaced in goal by a freshman,” Howard said. “This year’s squad is excited to play hard and work to bring their enthusiasm for the game to the field for each and every game.”

BASIC

Head coach: Dennis Mastny, fourth season

2013 record: 3-13-1 (3-6-1 Southeast, fourth)

Returning letter winners (starters): Seven (three)

Outlook: Mastny is back for his second stint as the Wolves’ coach and inherits a team with only three returning starters.

“Our outlook is hopeful for making the playoffs this year,” Mastny said. “We are in a tough league, but have some really good players this year. Our student body at Basic is small, so we will do the best we can.”

BOULDER CITY

Head coach: Duncan Stark, seventh season

2013 record: 4-10-2 (3-7-2 Sunrise, fifth)

Returning letter winners (starters): Four (four)

Top athletes: D Lauren Axelson (Sr.), D Alexus Pohe (So.), MF Oshauna Remy (Jr.), F Jordyn Trobiani (So.), GK Rebecca Smith (Fr.)

Outlook: The Eagles bring back just four starters from a team that finished fifth in the Sunrise League.

“We have a very young team this year with only one senior and four freshmen,” Stark said. “Many junior varsity players from last year have moved into starting positions with the varsity.

“The team is looking forward to returning to the playoffs after missing them last year for the first time in many years.”

CANYON SPRINGS

Head coach: Jonathan Hillmer, second season

2013 record: 6-12 (3-7 Northeast, fifth)

Returning letter winners (starters): Twelve (10)

Top athletes: GK Wendy Vargas (Sr.), MF Leti Godoy (Jr.), D Yareli Trujillo (Jr.), MF Paloma McNair (Sr.)

Outlook: The Pioneers narrowly missed the postseason last year, tying Valley for fourth place in the Northeast League with nine points, but losing the tiebreaker.

Ten starters return for Canyon Springs, which should get a spark on offense from Godoy (12 goals) and McNair (five goals). Trujillo (two goals), and Vargas (five shutouts) are back on defense.

“A very young team last year, we are returning many starters and hope to make a solid run to and through the playoffs this year and hope to vie for a region championship,” Hillmer said.

CENTENNIAL

Head coach: Kristina Kasten, second season

2013 record: 5-10-2 (2-6-2 Southwest, fifth)

Returning letter winners (starters): Six (four)

Top athletes: MF/F Shelby Riddle (Sr.), MF Katelyn Levoyer (So.), MF Kellsey Meechudhone (So.), MF Emilee Bohls (Sr.), D Sidney Morris (Jr.)

Outlook: The Bulldogs struggled to score last season, but with an influx of young talent, they’re hoping to improve this season.

“Centennial has a younger and enthusiastic group of players who are ready to take on the competition of the season,” Kasten said. “Centennial has great confidence that they will show much success in the upcoming games.”

CHAPARRAL

2013 record: 3-11 (3-9 Sunrise, sixth)

Returning letter winners (starters): One (one)

Top athletes: MF Fatima Fernandez (Sr.), D Lilian Camarena (Sr.)

Outlook: Yacubovich inherits a team with only one returnee, but a hunger for success.

“Chaparral is a very young team with only one returning varsity player, but it does not stop us from having high expectations for the upcoming season,” Yacubovich said. “The team was under great direction last year with coach Ric Grenell, and we plan to continue to build on those solid foundations and improve our record this season.

“These ladies have put in a lot of time in the weight room and into conditioning this offseason and are ready to play.”

CHEYENNE

Head coach: Michael Knutsen, second season

2013 record: 14-4 (9-3 Sunset, third)

Returning letter winners (starters): Twelve (eight)

Top athletes: F Lesly Rodriguez (Sr.), D Karla Rodriguez (So.), MF Josie Laurenco (Sr.)

Outlook: The Desert Shields welcome back eight starters from a team that placed third in the Sunset League behind perennial powers Pahrump Valley and Faith Lutheran.

Lesly Rodriguez had 23 goals, and Laurenco added six goals and 16 assists last year.

“Our team is young this year,” Knutsen said. “We have several returning starters that should keep us competitive. We expect to compete for a playoff spot this season and challenge every team we face.”

CIMARRON-MEMORIAL

Head coach: Deborah Antonino-Hunt

2013 record: 7-5-1 (6-3-1 Southwest, second)

Returning letter winners (starters): Nine (eight)

Top athletes: F Mariyah Espinoza (Sr.), F Jeanna Marin (Sr.), MF Genessis Martinez (Sr.), D Yadira Zavala (Jr.), GK Martha Gandarilla (Jr.), D Alejandra Contreras (Jr.)

Outlook: Martinez (13 goals, five assists), Marin (10 goals, one assist) and Espinoza (nine goals, four assists) all return and give the Jaguars plenty of offensive options.

Gandarilla posted six shutouts last year.

“The team looks to build from last season and looks for the first playoff win in the program’s history,” Becerra said. “The team looks to be strong in the league and push deep into the late stages of the playoffs.”

DURANGO

Head coach: Lara Dupree, second season

2013 record: 2-12 (0-10 Northwest, sixth)

Returning letter winners (starters): Eight (seven)

Top athletes: MF Alyssa Nunez (Fr.), F Esmerelda Buenrostro (Fr.), GK/MF Marina Bacon (Fr.)

Outlook: The Trailblazers have an influx of new talent and hope to show improvement.

“We have a few strong freshmen joining our varsity team,” Dupree said. “Our expectations this year are to play at the same level as our opponents, have less goals scored against us, and compete for some tie games or victories.”

ELDORADO

Head coach: David Ostler, third season

2013 record: 14-4-2 (6-3-1 Southeast, third)

Returning letter winners (starters): Eight (four)

Top athletes: F Tyana Slocum (So.), MF Cristal Mendoza (Sr.), MF Brianna Duran (So.)

Outlook: Graduation hit the Sundevils hard as the team lost 12 players, including its entire starting defense and key midfielders.

“One could say we are starting from scratch,” Ostler said. “However, the roster is not devoid of talent. Kimberly Tapia, Madison Granger and Cristal Mendoza should provide senior leadership and work ethic, and a trio of talented sophomores – Tyana Slocum, Brianna Duran and Dariana Mayoral-Osuna – will play key roles in getting this team into the playoffs.”

FAITH LUTHERAN

Head coach: Steve Morrill, fifth season

2013 record: 16-6-1 (9-2-1 Sunset, second)

Returning letter winners (starters): 13 (six)

Top athletes: MF Emily Neighbors (Sr.), F/MF Kristi Chinn (Jr.), MF Brenna Rohnkohl (Jr.), F/MF Megan Donnelly (So.)

Outlook: The Crusaders lost five starters, but return 13 letter winners and should be in position for a successful season.

Chinn (25 goals, 14 assists), Neighbors (13 goals, 12 assists), Donnelly (9 goals, 3 assists) and Rohnkohl (5 goals, 9 assists) all can be weapons on offense.

“With only two returning seniors, the team will rely on a number of sophomores and juniors that contributed last season,” Morrill said. The team hopes to compete at a high level for the Sunset League and progress far into the playoffs.”

FOOTHILL

Head coach: Cynthia Guzman, fifth season

2013 record: 13-7-1 (8-1-1 Southeast, second)

Returning letter winners (starters): 12 (nine)

Top athletes: F Katie Ballou (Jr.), F Tayler Arteaga (Jr.), MF Jillian Vigil (Sr.), MF Hanna Harrison (So.), GK Rachel Kole (Sr.)

Outlook: Nine starters are back from a team that finished one point out of first place in the Southeast League.

Among the returnees are offensive threats in Ballou (29 goals, 14 assists), Arteaga (nine goals, four assists), Vigil (seven goals, four assists) and Harrison (six goals, seven assists).

Kole, who posted five shutouts, returns in goal for the Falcons.

“Each year our program gets more and more competitive,” Guzman said. “This year we are extremely excited about our 12 veterans and new talent on the team. Adding only four new players to our roster, we have developed a strong camaraderie, reliability and trust.

“We expect great results this season and throughout playoffs.”

GREEN VALLEY

Head coach: Catherine Davis, second season

2013 record: 14-3-5 (7-0-3 Northeast, first)

Returning letter winners (starters): Eleven (nine)

Top athletes: MF Madison Holborrow (Sr.), D Stephanie Chiasson (Sr.), GK Kiyana Lopez (Jr.), F Alexis Kirson (So.)

Outlook: The Gators bring back nine starters from a team that advanced to the Sunrise Region championship match last year.

Lopez (13 shutouts) was the Sunrise Region goalkeeper of the year last year and is back to anchor the defense along with Chiasson.

Kirson (10 goals, two assists) and Holborrow (five goals, four assists) likely will be among the leaders on offense.

“We have a very strong returning core and an incredible freshman class that is sure to compete for playing time and even starting positions,” Davis said.

2013 record: 5-10-2 (2-7-1 Southeast, fifth)

Returning letter winners (starters): Eleven (seven)

PAHRUMP VALLEY

Head coach: Pamela Larmouth, fifth season

Returning letter winners (starters): Seven (four)

Top athletes: D Brittany Klenzcar (Sr.), D Alyssa Turner (Sr.), D Ashlyn DiBlasi (Sr.), MF Paige Chafee (Jr.)

Outlook: Losing the state’s all-time top scorer in Sydney Sladek is enough, but the Trojans graduated a big senior class.

Chafee (12 goals, four assists) is the only one of Pahrump’s top five scorers from last year returning.

“Our team will be rebuilding this year,” said Larmouth, whose squad finished second in the state last year. “We will need to fill vacant positions and work on team building.

“We are excited to work with new athletes, both junior varsity and incoming athletes, and find a rhythm that works for our team.”

PALO VERDE

Head coach: Frank Messina, eighth season

2013 record: 16-3-1 (8-2 Northwest, second)

Returning letter winners (starters): Twelve (nine)

Top athletes: MF Jadyn Nogues (So,), MF Mackenzie Nogues (Sr.), F Macee Barlow (So.)

Outlook: A fantastic season ended on a sour note for the Panthers, who bowed out in the first round of the Sunset Region playoffs. But with nine starters back, Palo Verde is set up for another strong year.

Jadyn Nogues (18 goals, eight assists), Barlow (10 goals, 10 assists) and Mackenzie Nogues (five goals, 14 assists) all are capable offensive weapons.

“The returning players look to bounce back and work hard for another league title,” Messina said. “The last year’s expectations were extremely high, and Palo Verde’s loss of a key scoring leader will not hinder the competitive edge often seen from this squad, especially with the addition of a few young players.

“Palo Verde’s expectations certainly have not changed, and even though the road to the final stage may involve additional hard work, the players are determined to meet their goals and to challenge each other along the way.”

RANCHO

Head coach: John Besancon, fifth season

2013 record: 3-13 (0-10 Northeast, sixth)

Returning letter winners (starters): Eight (five)

Top athletes: MF Brenda Torres-Chavez (Sr.), F Yesenia Godoy (Jr.), MF Morgan Wilson (Jr.)

Outlook: The Rams struggled to compete last season, but hope to be in better position to succeed this year.

“The future is bright for Rancho women’s soccer,” Besancon said. “We have a large and talented group of freshmen to help Rancho rebuild the soccer program after a couple of tough years.

“I expect us to grow and mature throughout the season and into the upcoming seasons.”

SHADOW RIDGE

2013 record: 9-8-3 (5-3-2 Northwest, third)

Returning letter winners (starters): 12 (nine)

Top athletes: MF/D Shelby Gunny (Sr.), MF Sasha Villa (Sr.), MF Alexandra Ortega (Sr.), F Lindsay Irwin (Sr.), MF/D Abigayle Esqueda (Sr.), D Crystal Adame (Sr.), D Amanda Aragon (Sr.)

Outlook: Williams takes over a team that returns nine starters after placing third in the Northwest League last year.

Irwin led the team with eight goals and three assists last year. The bulk of the team’s offense returns, but the Mustangs lost goalkeepers Dallas Gunny (four shutouts) and Kaila Hurley (2.5 shutouts) to graduation.

SIERRA VISTA

Head coach: Ross Muir, third season

Returning letter winners (starters): Ten (six)

Top athletes: F Sophia Omidiji (Sr.), MF Calista Reyes (So.), MF Angelina Iniguez (Jr.)

Outlook: Six starters return for the Mountain Lions, who have a good one-two punch on offense in Reyes (18 goals, 11 assists) and Omidiji (16 goals, three assists).

“We are leaning on a small number of returners to maintain the hard-working mentality from last year,” Muir said. “The new players have shown great potential, and with the experience of the returners, we are confident to improve on last year.

“We are still hopeful to record the first playoff win for the women’s soccer program.”

TECH

Head coach: Josh Jones, 14th season

2013 record: 15-4-1 (12-0 Sunrise, first)

Returning letter winners (starters): Twelve (six)

Top athletes: MF/F Adriana Guzman (So.), Abrana Wielgosiak (Sr.), MF Monica Figuerora (Sr.), F Melissa Lopez (So.)

Outlook: The Roadrunners bring back six starters and plenty of firepower from a team that ran the table in the Sunrise League last year.

Wielgosiak had 38 goals and nine assists, and Guzman (15 goals, 14 assists), Figuerora (seven goals, 23 assists) and Lopez (seven goals, two assists) also can be big weapons.

“The Roadrunners hope to continue to build off their second league title last season,” Jones said. “If some of the veteran players and younger players can mesh together, they will be able to make another playoff run.”

VIRGIN VALLEY

Head coach: Bob Snell, 15th season

2013 record: 9-7-5 (6-4-2 Sunrise, third)

Returning letter winners (starters): Nine (five)

Top athletes: MF Emma Dodenbier (Sr.), F Abbie Barnum (So.), GK Spencer Green (Jr.), MF Marlene Quirarte (Jr.), D/MF Kennedi Ludvigson (So.)

Outlook: Graduation wasn’t kind to the Bulldogs, who lost three of their four defenders and three of their top four scorers.

Barnum returns after scoring 22 goals as a freshman, and the Bulldogs welcome back Green in goal.

“We are counting on players moving up from a solid junior varsity team, as well as a strong incoming freshmen class,” Snell said. “We have talent, but are young and inexperienced at the varsity level. If things come together, we could have a special season.

“We want to build on the success of last season. We could fly under the radar.”
