LEAGUE CROSS COUNTRY: Foothill’s Haymore overcomes slow start to win

Foothill sophomore Karina Haymore struggled at the start of the Southeast League girls championship race on her home course Saturday.

Haymore eventually found her way to front of the pack at the 50-meter mark of the race, and then ran away from the pack to claim the league championship, winning the 3.1-mile race in a personal-best 19 minutes, 39.8 seconds.

“I feel great,” Haymore said. “It felt good to get first place. I was struggling at the beginning of the race because of nerves. I did my best and tried pushing harder each mile.”

Foothill’s Erica Williams was second with a time of 20:06, and Coronado’s Danielle Greene was third in 20:22.

Coronado ended up winning the team race with 46 points. Foothill was second with 58 points, and Green Valley was third with 110 points.

Races were grouped to have Southwest, Southeast and Sunrise League runners together in one race, and Northwest, Northeast and Sunset in another. Each league, though, was scored separately.

Shadow Ridge’s Julia Pack won the Southwest League title, finishing in 19:54.0.

The Mustangs had the top four finishers in the race – Serena Garcia (20:48.4), Elizabeth Terry (20:49.6) and Jessica Graf (20:56.1) — and won the team title with 16 points. Bishop Gorman was second with 70 points, and Legacy was third with 74 points.

In the Sunrise race, Del Sol’s Ingrid Zarate won the league title with a time of 20:36.0. Boulder City’s Sierra Selinger (20:43.2) finished second and third, respectively. Boulder City won the team title with 23 points, and Tech was second with 35.

Centennial freshman Alexis Gourrier had the best overall time of the day running in the Northeast, Northwest, Sunset race.

Gourrier took the Northwest title in 18:59.9. Centennial’s Kayla Roberts (19:16.8) was second as the Bulldogs took the team crown with 17 points. Arbor View was second with 54.

In the Northeast League, Liberty’s Skyler Free won the title with a time of 19:54. Her teammate, Sydney Groom, was second (22:05.3). The Patriots had the top five scoring runners to win the title with 15 points.

Faith Lutheran’s Kendall Larson won the Sunset League title in 20:43.2. Jessica Scamman, also from Faith, was second in 20:53.8 to help the Crusaders to a team title with 22 points. Clark was second with 55.

Centennial dominated the Northwest boys race as Dajour Braxton ran away from the field in 15:48.2. Arbor View’s Tim Myers was second in 17:28.6, and Centennial’s Keith Turner was third with a time of 17:38.9.

The Bulldogs also won the team title with 21 points. Arbor View was second with 56 points.

Valley’s Kidus Feleke won a tight Northeast boys race in 17:01.2. Las Vegas’ Miguel Ramirez was second in 17:14.0, and Silverado’s Asimwe Oben-Nyarko was third with a time of 17:28.0.

Silverado and Las Vegas each finished with 43 points, but Silverado won the team title on a sixth-runner tiebreaker.

Green Valley had the top two finishers in the Southeast race in Austin Rogers (16:22.1) and Leonardo Rubi (16:51.5). Basic’s Steven Burch was third with a time of 16:53.

The Wolves won the team title with 36 points. The Gators were second with 39 points.

Bishop Gorman’s Jacob Holland won the Southwest race in 16:42.8. Durango’s Felman Mesgun was second in 17:14.1.

Shadow Ridge and Durango tied atop the team standings in the Southwest with 41 points, but the Mustangs had the better sixth-runner time and took the title.

Tech’s Garrett Meyer won the Sunrise League title with a time of 16:33.5. Abdirahman Mohamed was second (17:02.4), and Tech’s Davian Parks was third (17:47.2).

The Roadrunners won the team title with 36 points. Virgin Valley was second with 60 points, and Chaparral was third with 99 points.

In the Sunset League race, Faith Lutheran’s Chase Wood finished in 16:30.4 to claim the league title, finishing ahead of teammate Austin Hunt (17:00.7).

The Crusaders also won the boys’ league title with 33 points, four points better than Clark.
