Liberty’s Strawther commits to UNLV

While the nation’s premier boys basketball players have been on display in Las Vegas but remain hush-hush on where they’ll attend college, one of Southern Nevada’s top girls basketball players announced Sunday she’s staying home.

Liberty senior-to-be Paris Strawther made a nonbinding oral commitment to UNLV. The first day she can sign a letter of intent is Nov. 12, and the Rebels’ coaches cannot comment until that time.

“A lot went into my decision, and I couldn’t have made it this far without the support of my family, and my coaches from the Henderson Heat and Liberty High School,” Strawther said. “I also want to thank all of the schools that recruited me, but in the end I know that UNLV is the best total fit for me.”

The 6-foot-2-inch forward was being courted by several colleges, including New Mexico, Boise State and San Diego State. Strawther led Liberty in scoring (12.4), rebounding (10.5), blocked shots (1.3) and field-goal percentage (50 percent) as a junior, the second straight season she paced the Patriots in all categories.

Strawther helped Liberty reach the Division I state final in March, and she was named first-team all-state for the second year in a row.

“I’m just looking forward to working with the coaching staff, former players, current players and all the new recruits so we can make Lady Rebel Basketball a household name again,” Strawther said.

Strawther, the two-time Southeast League’s Most Valuable Player, was a McDonald’s All-American nominee during her junior campaign.
