HEAD OF THE CLASS: Centennial’s Gourrier sets course record at Sunset Park

The freshman set a course record, winning the Sunset Region title in a time of 19 minutes, 10.3 seconds for 3.1 miles at Sunset Park. She helped the Bulldogs capture their fourth consecutive Sunset team title.

The freshman quarterback passed for 458 yards and three touchdowns as the Patriots rallied from a 17-0 deficit to beat Las Vegas 48-20.

The sophomore singles player defeated Coronado’s Ryland McDermott 7-5, 7-6 (2) in the Division I state final to become the school’s first state tennis champion.

GIRLS TENNIS

Averiana Mitchell

Sierra Vista

The freshman breezed to the Division I-A state singles championship, beating Faith Lutheran’s Kathleen Wright 6-0, 6-2. Mitchell didn’t drop a set all season, finishing 51-0.

HEAD OF THE CLASS

ADELSON SCHOOL — Boys cross country runner Cutty Zanghi won the Divsion III Southern Region meet with a time of 18 minutes, 24.2 seconds for 3.1 miles.

ARBOR VIEW — Boys soccer player Alfredo Carrera had two goals, including the winner in the second overtime, in a 3-2 victory over Bishop Gorman in the Sunset Region quarterfinals.

BONANZA — Girls cross country runner Esmeralda Hinojos placed 17th at the Sunset Region meet with a time of 21 minutes, 21.4 seconds for 3.1 miles to qualify for state. Girls volleyball player Claire Goodsell had a total of 52 digs in three matches, finishing the season with 631 digs.

BOULDER CITY — Girls cross country runner Jessica Embro was second in the Division I-A Southern Region meet with a time of 20 minutes, 31.3 seconds for 3.1 miles.

CIMARRON-MEMORIAL — Football player Armond Whitney had nine carries for 119 yards and two TDs in a 47-0 victory over Bonanza.

DESERT OASIS — Girls soccer player Rachel Handelman played a strong game at midfield in a 0-0 tie with Shadow Ridge in the Sunset Region tournament. Handelman also made her penalty kick in the shootout, but the Mustangs advanced, 5-3. Boys cross country runner Zach Wood qualified for state by finishing 11th in the Sunset Region meet with a time of 17 minutes, 39 seconds for 3.1 miles.

FAITH LUTHERAN — Girls soccer player Emily Neighbors had two goals and an assist in a 10-2 win over Desert Pines.

LEGACY — Girls volleyball player Ashly Goor had 19 kills, six digs and three aces in a 3-1 victory over Durango to secure a berth in the Sunset Region tournament.

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Football player Ian Locke passed for 315 yards and five TDs and rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown in a 51-16 win over White Pine.

SIERRA VISTA — Boys soccer player Zekarias Kassaye had two goals and an assist in a 5-3 victory over Adelson School.
