Two prep games set for TV

The high school football season kicks off this week, and there will be two televised games involving local teams.

But not all football broadcasts are created equal.

The first game of the season involving local teams will be the Thursday Night Lights opener featuring Durango at Valley at 7 p.m. Thursday on KVMY-12.

Neither of those teams won a game last season, and both are riding losing streaks of more than a year. Durango is looking to snap a 16-game skid. The Trailblazers last won on Sept. 12, 2014, a 33-25 victory over Bonanza.

Valley’s streak is even longer. The Vikings haven’t won since Nov. 1, 2013, when they beat Rancho 74-15, a span of 18 games.

On the other end of the spectrum is Saturday’s matchup featuring Bishop Gorman at Cedar Hill (Texas). That game, which will be televised at 6 p.m. on ESPN2, features teams with lofty national rankings.

The Gaels have won the past two mythical national titles and enter the game ranked No. 3 nationally by USA Today. Gorman has won 39 straight. The Gaels haven’t lost since falling 28-12 to Booker T. Washington (Florida) on Oct. 4, 2013.

Cedar Hill is ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today.
