RECRUITING: Desert Pines’ Smith picks Colorado State

Desert Pines senior defensive end Anthony Smith made an oral commitment to Colorado State on Wednesday night, announcing his decision on Twitter.

Smith's commitment is nonbinding, and the first day he can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 3. Colorado State's coaches cannot comment until that time.

"IM (sic) BLESSED TO SAY THAT I AM OFFICIALLY A COLORADO STATE COMMIT!" Smith wrote on his Twitter account.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 250-pound Smith suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during a preseason scrimmage in August and missed the entire regular season. He recorded a state-best 16 sacks as a junior for Desert Pines and was named first-team all-state.

Smith is rated the state's top prospect in the class of 2016 by Rivals.com and is a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, Scout.com and 247sports.com. He chose the Rams over scholarship offers from Colorado, Hawaii, San Diego State, UNLV, UNR and Washington State.
