Pahranagat Valley matches eight-man football record, named Team of the Year

TEAM OF THE YEAR

Pahranagat Valley Football

The kings of eight-man football captured their eighth consecutive state title with a 54-28 win over Whittell in the Division IV state title game.

That victory was the 93rd in a row for the Panthers, matching the national record for the longest winning streak in eight-man football. Shattuck (Oklahoma) won 93 straight from 2003 to 2009.

It is the third-longest streak in prep football history regardless of class. De La Salle (California) owns the overall record with 151 straight wins from 1992 to 2003, and Independence (North Carolina) notched 109 victories in a row from 2000 to 2007.

Pahranagat Valley’s last loss was a 26-24 setback to Carlin in the 2007 Class 1A state semifinals.

QUOTE

“I’m not going to lie, it is a pretty cool thing. But we can think about it for about a week, and then we’re on to next season. We’re ready to go. We’re 0-0 again. That’s the way it’s got to be; otherwise it gets too much in your head, and you tend to collapse.”

— Junior Christian Higbee after beating Whittell in the state final.
