NOTES: Several locals on the move during spring recruiting

The spring combine season is in full swing, and that means prep football players across the country are trying to impress college coaches without actually putting on pads and helmets.

Locally, the top prospects in the class of 2016 already have been identified and earned scholarship offers. Others will emerge over the next couple of months over the summer.

Here are a handful of names to follow during the spring recruiting period:

■ Michael Geraghty, Bishop Gorman: The 6-foot-2-inch, 250-pound defensive end missed all of last season with a torn shoulder labrum after recording 19 tackles and four sacks as a sophomore. He was offered by Army last month.

■ Keenen King, Arbor View: An offensive tackle for the Aggies, the 6-5, 290-pound King projects as a guard at the collegiate level. He has offers from Arizona State, San Diego State and UNLV and is hearing from most of the Pac-12.

■ Ikem Okeke, Bishop Gorman: The 6-foot, 195-pounder made 55 tackles and was second on the Gaels with six sacks last season. He has been offered by UNLV and UNR.

■ Samuel Poutasi, Desert Pines: The 6-3, 285-pound offensive lineman is the younger brother of NFL draft prospect Jeremiah Poutasi of Utah. Hawaii, San Diego State, UNLV, UNR and Utah have extended an offer.

■ Anthony Smith, Desert Pines: The 6-3, 240-pound defensive end is the top prospect in the state, according to Rivals.com, after recording 16 sacks as a junior. Smith has offers from San Diego State, UNLV and UNR and is drawing interest from the Pac-12, too.

■ GORMAN TRIO RANKED — Rivals.com released its top 100 football players for the class of 2017 on Monday, and the list includes three current Bishop Gorman standouts.

Defensive lineman Haskell Garrett, wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey and quarterback Tate Martell were ranked as four-star prospects after helping the Gaels to USA Today’s mythical national championship as sophomores. Martell, the Gatorade Nevada Player of the Year, made an unofficial visit to UNLV last weekend.

■ SENIOR NAMED TO ALL-USA — Bishop Gorman senior Cadyn Grenier was named to the All-USA preseason baseball team by USA Today. The 5-10, 180-pound shortstop/pitcher hit .491 with four home runs and 31 RBIs with 49 runs scored, eight doubles and 16 stolen bases last season.

Grenier, an Oregon State signee, was earlier named preseason All-America by Collegiate Baseball newspaper along with teammate Brandon Wulff, Arbor View junior Nick Quintana and Silverado senior Vincent Taormina (second team).

■ FOOTBALL COACHING HIRES — Palo Verde promoted longtime assistant Joe Aznarez to head coach, making him only the second coach in school history. Aznarez replaces Darwin Rost, who announced his retirement last month after compiling a 154-50 record in 19 seasons.

Valley hired George Baker as its third coach in three seasons. Baker went 18-22 at Centennial from 2006-09 and never reached the Sunset Region playoffs.

■ RECENT COMMITMENTS — Bishop Gorman senior Matt Hudgins to Army for baseball. … Needles senior Kobee McCorkle to Kansas Wesleyan for football. … Foothill junior Sarah Maddox to Drake for softball.
