NOTES: Area football recruits weigh options prior to signing day

National Signing Day is a week away, and most of the area’s top football recruits in the class of 2017 have made their college choices.

Here is an update on a few of the top uncommitted seniors who are weighing their options before they can sign a letter of intent Feb. 1:

Frank Harris, Basic — The 6-foot-3-inch, 200-pound wide receiver/safety was one of the most improved players in the Sunrise Region as a senior. He was offered a scholarship by San Diego State on Jan. 13 and already had an offer from Idaho.

Harris also is one of the nation’s top high jumpers with a personal best of 7-0¼ and has garnered interest from several Pac-12 schools for track and field.

Poutasi Poutasi, Desert Pines — The 6-4, 305-pound offensive lineman made an official visit to Auburn from Jan. 13 to 15 and is scheduled to visit Mississippi this weekend. But another school has been recruiting the onetime Louisville commit hard in recent weeks.

“He just got an offer from Cal,” Desert Pines coach Tico Rodriguez said.

Will Brewer, Liberty — The center anchored the Patriots’ offensive line and was a first-team all-state pick but is awaiting a Division I offer. He was offered a scholarship during his official visit to Colorado Mesa last weekend.

“I think he’s just waiting to see if something else comes along,” Liberty coach Rich Muraco said.

Tyler Thornton, Palo Verde — The 6-5, 205-pound tight end/linebacker, who drew interest from Idaho after his junior season, made an official visit to Adams State (Colorado) last weekend and is slated to visit Dixie State (Utah) this weekend.

“He will probably make a decision within the next week or so,” Panthers coach Joe Aznarez said. “I anticipate him signing with one of those two places.”

GORMAN ADDS TWO GAMES

Bishop Gorman football coach Kenny Sanchez confirmed that the Gaels will host powerhouses De La Salle (California) and DeMatha (Maryland) as part of their 2017 schedule. Sanchez said last month Gorman agreed to play Mater Dei (California) on Sept. 1 or 2 in Southern California.

DeMatha finished 12-0 and ranked No. 4 in the nation by USA Today this past season. De La Salle, which lost in the California Open Division Bowl last month, is expected to enter next season nationally ranked.

The Gaels have an open spot in the schedule during Week 3, and fans are clamoring for a matchup against IMG Academy (Florida). When asked if he is working on an opponent for that week, Sanchez texted, “Maybe.”
