Legacy loses lead quickly, Gaels roll

For 21 seconds Friday night, Legacy held a lead over the top-ranked football team in the country.

Just 17 seconds later, Bishop Gorman took control.

The Gaels never let go.

Gorman erased a 6-0 deficit with 70 unanswered points on their way to a 70-13 win over the Longhorns.

As with many Gorman victories, several players played key roles in the blowout.

Sophomore quarterback Tate Martell completed 6 of 8 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns in just 14 minutes of action. Martell threw six straight completions, including three in a row to Cordell Broadus, all for touchdowns.

“I love throwing the deep ball,” said Martell, who tossed TD passes of 18, 28 and 67 yards to Broadus. “They played lots of one-on-one coverage so we knew we would have chances deep. It was another total team effort, everyone played well.”

Broadus caught four passes for 131 yards.

Tyjon Lindsey caught a pair of scores from senior Danny Hong, as Gorman’s quarterbacks combined for 11-of-13 passes for 258 yards and six scores.

“Our passing game was certainly on tonight,” said Gorman head coach Tony Sanchez. “Yes, we did turn the ball over early, but the kids quickly responded.”

The early turnover came on the opening kickoff, when Austin Arnold fumbled and Johnny Sarabia recovered for Legacy at the Gorman 22.

Two plays later, quarterback Tanoa Alapati found D’Angelo Lindsey for the TD, and Legacy (2-5, 1-1 Southwest) had a 6-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived.

Russell Booze scored on a 67-yard run on the Gaels’ first offensive play. Booze also scored on a 68-yard run late in the second quarter, and finished with 141 yards on just four carries.

Bishop Gorman (9-0, 3-0) rolled up 475 yards of offense and held the Longhorns to 181. Alapati completed 12-of-26 passes for 118 yards, but was intercepted four times. Legacy committed eight turnovers.
