Former Gorman coach Sanchez earns national honor

Former Bishop Gorman football coach Tony Sanchez has been named the U.S. Army All-American Bowl national coach of the year.

Sanchez guided the Gaels to a 15-0 record, their sixth consecutive large-school state championship and a No. 1 national ranking this season.

He will receive the Yoast Award, named for legendary high school coach Bill Yoast.

Sanchez left Gorman on Dec. 11 to accept the head coaching position at UNLV. He was 86-5 in six seasons with the Gaels.

Bishop Gorman was crowned the high school football national champion by MaxPreps on Monday, earning the school’s fourth mythical football national title.
