FOOTBALL: Lake Mead breezes past Mountain View

Lake Mead football coach Kerry Johnson inisted he wasn’t running up the score against Mountain View on Friday afternoon.

Saints coach Ray LeBoeuf begs to differ.

The Eagles spoiled Mountain View’s senior day with a 47-14 victory. Lake Mead co-quarterback Marcus Gonzalez threw two touchdown passes and caught another. Co-quarterback Joshua Thorrell accounted for two touchdowns and had two of Saints quarterback Tyrell Brooks’ six interceptions.

“We we’re trying to not lay too many points on them,” Johnson said, “but we wanted to make sure we came out here and executed. I think we did that pretty well. We ran our offense.”

And ran it to a tee.

Lake Mead (3-5, 2-3 2A Southern Region) used its triple-option attack to net touchdowns on each of its first six offensive possessions to enact running time. Gonzalez and Thorrell took turns playing quarterback and threaded Mountain View’s defense with pinpoint precision and execution.

The Saints, who dress 11 players but had only 10 active players on Friday, scored against the Eagles’ first-team defense on Brooks’ 37-yard touchdown pass to twin brother, Terrence, with 38 seconds left in the first half.

But Lake Mead’s Gonzales restarted running time with a touchdown pass in the final seconds of the first half to put the Eagles up 47-6, which drew the ire of LeBoeuf and the rest of Mountain View’s sideline.

“You guys clearly don’t know how to win!” LeBouef screamed at the opposing sideline. “That’s weak.”

The two coaches did not shake hands after the game. LeBouef had some choice words for Lake Mead’s program after the game and voluntarily addressed the situation

“We lost our best two linemen last week. Their coach knew that and he’s still blitzing,” LeBouef said. “It’s not just 11-on-10. It’s the classlessness of what they’re doing. Playing their ones. Classy. Lack of class.”

The Saints converted slender wide receiver Adrian Robles to the offensive line and played without a running back, leaving Brooks in a predictable predicament. He completed 23 of 44 pass attempts for 264 yards, two touchdowns and the six picks.

“Overall, pleased with how we performed defensively,” Johnson said. “We just have to tackle better.”

Terrence Brooks had 11 catches for 142 yards and a score and Daniel Reyes added five catches for 102 yards and a touchdown for Mountain View (0-6, 0-5 2A Southern).

Four Lake Mead players rushed for scores, including Thorrell, and three more caught touchdown passes.

“When we spread it out, it’s a lot easier,” Thorrell said. “(On defense, we wanted to) pretty much just keep them contained and not allow any big plays.”

It all worked.
