FOOTBALL: Coronado rallies to win season opener

Coronado’s football team scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in the fourth quarter Thursday to preserve a season-opening 41-26 win at Huntington Beach, Calif.

The Cougars, who fell behind just 15 seconds into the game and trailed 13-0 in the first quarter, rallied to build a 21-13 lead at the half and carried a 27-20 advantage into the fourth quarter before cashing in on a fumble return and an interception return for touchdowns.

The Oilers, the defending California Interscholastic Federation Southwest Division champions, had a touchdown run with 4:30 left in the game, but got no closer.

“Our kids played hard,” Coronado coach Brad Talich said. “They laid it on the line for us. To be able to come into a hostile environment and handle them like we did is very promising for our kids.”

Pahranagat Valley 62, Wells 8 — At Alamo, Tabor Maxwell completed 7 of 10 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers extended the nation’s longest active winning streak to 70 games with a rout of the Leopards in the opener for both teams.
