FOOTBALL: Clock control helps Shadow Ridge upset Las Vegas — VIDEO

Shadow Ridge scored with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter and coach Travis Foster still felt his team left too much time on the clock.

He was almost right.

Soon after running back Aubrey Nellems scored a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Mustangs a 28-21 lead, Las Vegas returned the ensuing kickoff to Shadow Ridge’s 43-yard line. On the next play a run by Wildcats back Elijah Hicks gained 24 yards.

Then Las Vegas stalled. A throw towards the end zone fell incomplete and quarterback Zach Matlock was wrapped up in the backfield on the final play. The Shadow Ridge sideline rushed the field as the team’s 28-21 road upset of No. 4 Las Vegas was secure.

“Craziest 30 seconds ever,” Mustangs senior Malik Lindsey said. “It’s big. Our backs were against the wall. Everyone expected us to lose. But we showed up big and we fought.”

Lindsey was drenched in sweat after the game, a product of carrying 29 times against the Las Vegas (3-1) defense for 158 yards. His biggest run came on the final drive, when he ran straight up the middle to convert a fourth-and-6 on the Wildcats 47-yard line.

He also converted a third-and-1 near the goal line to set up Nellems’ winning plunge.

Shadow Ridge’s flexbone rushing attack, which finished with 451 rushing yards, worked to perfection early to set up two long touchdown drives. The Mustangs averaged 58 points in their first two games with many explosive gains, but their first two drives took a total of 27 plays and chewed up 14 minutes on the clock.

“We’ve been telling our kids all year, we want to grind,” Foster said. “We want to get out and control the clock.”

The two drives gave Shadow Ridge a 13-0 lead but then Hicks almost singlehandedly gave Las Vegas the lead. Hicks had a 28-yard touchdown run straight up the middle before halftime and then a 65-yard touchdown run along the right sideline on the first play of the second half.

The electric Las Vegas runner finished with 190 yards on only 10 carries.

The Mustangs answered with an explosive play of their own, a 55-yard touchdown run by Nellems that started the fourth quarter. A successful two-point conversion gave Shadow Ridge a 21-14 lead.

Matlock had two completions totaling 54 yards and a touchdown on Las Vegas’ next drive, but after the teams traded interceptions the Mustangs’ offense got back to work.

Once again the team strung together a long drive, marching most of the length of the field towards the end zone. While Foster may have wanted the clock to bleed a little more, he’s not complaining about the result.

“It’s especially huge for us because they have beaten everybody in the Northwest so far,” Foster said. “It’s awesome.”

Arbor View 41, Faith Lutheran 22 — At Faith Lutheran, Deago Stubbs scored three touchdowns to lead the Aggies over the Crusaders.

Stubbs rushed for 101 yards and caught seven passes for 152 yards. Hayden Bollinger completed 12 of 16 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0 Northwest) scored on five of their six second-half possessions while holding Cimarron (1-3, 0-1) scoreless.

Coronado limited Valley (1-3) to 70 yards of offense. The Vikings’ best opportunity to score came when Leyland Crawford returned a kick-off 85 yards down to the 5-yard line. But Valley turned the ball over on the next play following a botched handoff.

David Smith rushed for 55 yards on 16 carries for the Vikings.

Coronado also got a pair of defensive scores, with Dillon Stewart returning a fumble 42 yards for a touchdown, and D’Angelo Bottley returning an interception 80 yards for a score. Bottley finished with two interceptions.

Western responded quickly, as the Warriors needed just three plays to drive down the field, apped by Rodger Harriosn’s 7-yard TD run that cut the lead to 7-6.

The offense slowed down after that, but Western fumbled a snap deep in its own territory late in the first quarter, and Cheyenne would capitalize with Green scoring on a 2-yard run to give the Desert Shields a 14-6 lead.

Cajuin Jackson scored on a 6-yard rush, and Cheyenne (2-3, 1-0 Sunset League) led 21-6 at the half.

Another fumble set up Cheyenne’s final score, a 10-yard TD pass from Matthew LaBonte to William Federson with 4:00 to go in the third quarter.
