Evans sparks No. 2 Bulldogs in victory over Mustangs

Leading by only eight points late in the second quarter Friday, No. 2 Centennial needed a huge momentum swing against visiting Shadow Ridge.

Quarterback Jamaal Evans made the play, and the Bulldogs never looked back.

Evans found a wide-open Savon Scarver for a 30-yard touchdown with less than two seconds remaining in the half, and Centennial rolled from there, downing Shadow Ridge, 47-18.

Scarver made two defenders turn the wrong way, and Evans hit the junior receiver in stride for the easy score.

"We really needed that play before halftime," said Bulldogs assistant coach Devin Jones, as head coach Leon Evans missed Friday's game. "We tried to get some momentum the entire first half, but they (Shadow Ridge) kept battling. We were riding high after that touchdown."

Indeed the Bulldogs had the momentum, and never let up.

Just 93 seconds into the third quarter, Centennial's defense made its biggest play of the night, as linebacker Marvin Perkins intercepted a Kassius Swain pass and raced 16 yards for a 33-12 lead.

But the night belonged to Jamaal Evans, who threw for 240 yards and three scores, including a 69-yarder to Juan Rodriguez with 2:35 remaining in the third to give the Bulldogs (2-0) a 28-point lead.

Evans threw a pair of touchdowns to Scarver (47 and 30 yards). In addition, Evans rushed for 30 yards and scored twice as Centennial gained 401 yards.

"We started slow, no question," Jones said. "But once we got some steam, things fell into place. We have lots of weapons on this team, and all played well tonight."

Dominick Wilson led Shadow Ridge with 152 yards on 23 carries and had a 54-yard run in the second quarter that cut the Bulldogs' lead to 14-12. Aubrey Nellems rushed for one score and caught a 6-yard pass from Swain for another touchdown.

Shadow Ridge (0-2) finished with 285 yards, 201 on the ground.
