Aggies cruise without leading rusher

Arbor View played Friday night without Curtis Jones, its leading rusher and one of Southern Nevada's top running backs, but thanks to Morris Jackson, the Aggies' potent double-wing ground attack didn't miss a beat.

Jackson ran for 152 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries to lead the Aggies to a 45-6 rout of host Desert Oasis.

Deago Stubbs added 64 yards rushing and a touchdown on seven carries. He also caught one pass for 39 yards for the Aggies (5-1, 1-0 Northwest League).

"Morris had a good game tonight," Arbor View head coach Dan Barnson said. "We lost Curt last week. He came out and tried to play, but he was still tender. Deago also had some good runs tonight, but Morris stepped up and did great. We got backs. We got some kids who can run the ball."

The Aggies defense also came up big, scoring three touchdowns. Staycee Robinson scored on a 15-yard fumble return, Bishop Jones scored on a 55-yard fumble return, and Gary Weaver recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Noah Noce also intercepted a pass from Desert Oasis quarterback Brannon Flowers to kill a promising Diamondbacks' drive at the end of the first half. The Aggies took a 35-0 lead into the locker room.

"Desert Oasis moved the ball up and down the field, and then our kids would kind of tighten it down," Barnson said. "Desert Oasis is a good team, but we have some things to work on and clean up. We've got a bye week next week, so we are going to get healthy. We won, so we are happy with that."

The Aggies scored 21 first-quarter points to take a commanding lead. The scoring barrage started on an 11-yard run by Jackson, a 14-yard run by Stubbs, and Robinson's fumble return.

Quarterback Hayden Bollinger then hit Bishop Jones on an 11-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter to go up 28-0.

Bollinger finished 7 of 9 passing for 79 yards and a touchdown.

"Hayden does well, and it's something that changes us a little bit," Barnson said. "Instead of just completely 100 percent grinding it out, it forces teams to change up what they do against us. He's young, and he's still learning. We are all still learning because we were one way for so long. We still rely on that, don't get me wrong, but he has a pretty good arm."

After the Bollinger to Jones scoring play, the Diamondbacks' defense played inspired football, but couldn't take advantage of two red-zone drives in the first half. The Aggies cruised from there to post their first league win.

"It is always nice to come out and get the first league win," Barnson said. "It's kind of like the season is starting over. The kids came out on fire and played well in the first quarter, and then we did what we do. We exhaled and got a little lackadaisical, and we've got to stop doing that. We'll work on it."

Carter Andrade's 40-yard field goal put the Aggies up 38-0 midway through the third quarter.

Desert Oasis (4-2, 0-1) got on the board with 1:34 left in the third quarter, when Zion Jones recovered a fumble by teammate Ty'shun McClinton in the end zone.

McClinton ran for 117 yards on 21 carries, and Flowers added 89 yards on 18 carries for the Diamondbacks.
