FIELDER’S CHOICES: Taking a break from beach to make my picks

My family decided to spend Labor Day weekend here checking on my brother, who started classes at the University of Hawaii a couple of weeks ago. That’s right. Fielder went to college in Hawaii.

Of course he did.

While I was here, I wanted to hang out with the Faith Lutheran football team and kick a few field goals between the palm tree uprights, but Hurricane Lester sort of messed up my plans. At least I got to see the Crusaders’ win Sunday.

I still have a few more days remaining in Oahu, and Fielder and I plan to find the best loco moco plate on the island. We’re also going to scout Kahuku, since the Red Raiders visit Bishop Gorman next week for a Saturday night showdown in the “Ninth Island.”

The time difference here has me all goofed up, which explains why I went with so many double-digit point predictions. Fielder thinks I got too much sun at Hanauma Bay. He’s probably right.

■ Bishop Gorman vs. St. John Bosco (California) — When these teams met in 2014 (a 34-31 Gorman win), there was a huge thunderstorm, a classic quarterback duel between Tate Martell and Josh Rosen, and, like, 5,428 references to George Costanza’s secret ATM code.

“You know, the chocolate syrup. I love that stuff. I pour it in milk. It’s my favorite drink.”

Bosco hasn’t allowed a point in its two games this season and features two players averaging more than 11 yards per carry: running back Terrance Beasley and quarterback Re-al Mitchell, whose mom was Blaze on “American Gladiators.” She should bring that air cannon from the show and fire tennis balls at the Gaels defense. … Gorman by 13½.

■ Eldorado at Chaparral — It’s time to break out Merlin Olsen’s bronzed boot for the annual “Cleat Game.” The Cowboys have won three of the past four matchups, including a 41-8 blowout last season under the Thursday night lights.

Chaparral allowed touchdowns in all three phases during its loss to Basic. On the bright side, the Cowboys racked up 445 yards of total offense and scored 44 points for the second straight game. They might score more against the rival Sundevils. … Chaparral by 14.

■ Foothill at Arbor View — Let’s give a shoutout to the schedule makers, who gave us another great inter-region matchup here. And the bus drivers, too, since they’re the ones schlepping everybody from one end of the valley to the other, and back, to make this game happen.

I’m not holding last week’s result against the Falcons since Desert Hills traditionally is one of the top teams in Utah’s 3AA classification. But the game plan against Foothill is obvious through two games. Stop the run. The Aggies certainly know how to do that. … Arbor View by 12.

■ Green Valley at Palo Verde — I’m a sucker for short QBs. Russell Wilson. Michael Vick. The Buechele kid at Texas, who is listed at 6 feet 1 inch tall, but I call shenanigans. I might have to add the Gators’ 5-8 sophomore Kalyja Waialae to my list.

The Panthers struggled to contain Las Vegas’ passing game in a Week 1 loss and probably spent much of their bye week working on how to slow my new favorite quarterback. Good luck with that. … Green Valley by 9.

■ Canyon Springs at Clayton Valley Charter (California) — The Pioneers head to Concord, California, to face one of the East Bay’s top teams in a game that shouldn’t be close. Clayton Valley already owns a 14-point road victory over Northern Nevada power Reed.

But I’m not here to pick on Canyon Springs. I’m much nice than my brother. The only reason I included this game is so I can write that Clayton Valley’s mascot is the Ugly Eagles. Seriously. The Ugly Eagles.

That’s right up there with the Cairo (Georgia) Syrupmakers, the Yuma (Arizona) Criminals and the Poca (West Virginia) Dots on my list of favorite high school nicknames. … Clayton Valley by 34.

■ Del Sol at Durango — To steal a line from aging movie producer Bob Ryan in “Entourage,” what if I told you both of these teams are undefeated? Would that be something you might be interested in?

Also, this is the Gary Maki Bowl, with the fourth-year Dragons’ coach facing his former school. Boy, this game is brimming with storylines. Kappa. … Durango by 4.

■ Silverado at Desert Oasis — Skyhawks coach Randall Cunningham had a week off to reacclimate after being on Brazil time during the opener. Pesky Olympics and all. Now that Silverado’s leader has his circadian rhythm in order, I predict his offense will improve.

The Diamondbacks got their ground game working last week but couldn’t find the end zone in a 6-0 loss to John Muir (California). It won’t be any easier this week against a Silverado defense that blanked Mojave in Week 1. … Silverado by 10.

■ Coronado at Cheyenne — The Cougars drove inside the 25-yard line four times and came away with squadoosh in a Week 1 loss. I’m guessing red-zone offense was a point of emphasis during the bye week.

These teams have a common opponent, with each losing to Canyon Springs by six points. That doesn’t tell me much, so I’ll side with the home team. … Cheyenne by 3.
