VOLLEYBALL: Panthers top Rattlers in battle of state champions

Haden Van Orden dished out 49 assists Thursday as Palo Verde’s boys volleyball team topped visiting Mojave 25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 30-28 in a matchup of defending state champions.

Grant Tingey put down 15 kills, and Taylor Miller had eight kills for Palo Verde, which won state last season in Division I.

Clayton Fontano had 17 kills, 15 digs and three aces to lead Mojave, the two-time defending I-A state champions.

Antonyo Wright added 10 kills and three digs, and Josh Andam had 22 digs for the Rattlers.

Shadow Ridge 3, Legacy 1 — At Legacy, Cutler Leavitt had 18 kills and 15 digs, and Cody Heathcock added 12 kills and 11 digs in the Mustangs’ 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 win over the Longhorns.

C.J. McInnis had 38 assists and six digs, and Sebastian Capos tallied six kills and two blocks for Shadow Ridge.

Omari Wheeler led Legacy with 13 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Anthony Guevara finished with 12 kills and 13 digs, Nephi Purcell had 32 assists, three kills and 10 digs, and Daniel Contreras had 16 digs for the Longhorns.

Valley 3, Rancho 1 — At Rancho, Marty Heavey had 26 kills, 11 digs and three aces, and Jared Marchello added 19 kills and 10 digs as the Vikings beat the Rams, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 28-26.

Justin Sandoval dished out 48 assists, and Michael Levy had 12 digs for Valley, which also got 10 digs from Austin Smith.

Lamont Traylor led Rancho with 24 kills. Cameron Corcran had 36 assists and 15 digs, and Tiger Tokunaga had 10 digs for Rancho.

Bishop Gorman 3, Durango 1 — At Gorman, Charles Pollnow had 16 kills, 15 digs and three blocks, and Jacob Taylor added 15 kills, three digs and an ace as the Gaels rallied for a 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-19 win over the Trailblazers.

Will Hafen notched six kills and seven digs, and Trevor Papcock had 42 assists and three digs for Gorman.

Michael Diggins led Durango with 12 kills, five digs and two blocks. Andre Shabazz had two kills, 22 assists and seven digs, and Jaylen Clark had six kills, 12 digs and two blocks for the Trailblazers.

Las Vegas 3, Silverado 1 — At Las Vegas, Shaun Kampshoff had nine kills and three aces to lead the Wildcats to a 25-13, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23 victory over the Skyhawks.

Raymond Magante added six kills and 13 digs, and Luis Wong had 29 assists for Las Vegas.

Liberty 3, Canyon Springs 0 — At Liberty, Ian Tia had 10 kills to lead the Patriots to a 25-16, 25-21, 25-11 victory over the Pioneers.
