VOLLEYBALL: Palo Verde beats Gorman, locks up Southwest title

Grant Tingey had eight kills and three blocks, and Haden Van Orden dished out 44 assists Wednesday to help Palo Verde’s boys volleyball team wrap up the Division I Southwest League title with a 24-26, 26-24, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13 win over host Bishop Gorman.

Taylor Miller added seven kills and three blocks, and Jacob Scheer notched 26 digs for Palo Verde (25-10, 6-0 Southwest).

Jacob Taylor had 21 kills and 25 digs to lead Gorman (17-11, 4-3), which fell into a second-place tie with Durango (22-14, 4-3) with one league game remaining.

Will Hafen had 13 kills and 10 digs, Trevor Papcock added 50 assists and Ray Leon had eight kills and three blocks for the Gaels.

Western 3, Cheyenne 2 — At Western, Christian Macias had seven kills, 15 assists and 22 digs to help the Warriors outlast the Desert Shields, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 15-12.

Anthony Dodson added seven kills, seven blocks and two digs, and Brandon Ly had four kills, four aces and six digs for Western. Exequiel Yumul added four kills and six digs for Western, which got 19 digs from Leonel Acosta-Trevizo.

Tyler Buchanan paced Cheyenne with 13 kills and two blocks.

Durango 3, Legacy 1 — At Legacy, Michael Diggins had 22 kills and four aces to lead the Trailblazers to a 23-25, 25-18, 28-26, 27-25 victory over the Longhorns.

Andre Shabazz added nine digs, 32 assists and two blocks, and Jaylen Clark had eight kills and seven digs for Durango. Marc Viernes had 11 digs for the Trailblazers.

Omari Wheeler had 23 kills, four aces and five digs to lead Legacy. Quentin Brewster added 21 kills and seven digs, and teammate Nephi Purcell had 51 assists and eight digs for the Longhorns.

Mojave 3, Spring Valley 1 — At Spring Valley, Alex Carvalho had 22 kills, and Clayton Fontano added 16 kills and eight digs to lead the Rattlers to a 25-12, 25-13, 20-25, 25-16 win over the Grizzlies.

Jason Zombrano had 42 assists and five aces, and Antonyo Wright added 11 kills and four blocks for Mojave.

Troy Lance had seven assists and six kills for Spring Valley, and teammate Stevan Paukovic notched five assists and four kills.

Sierra Vista 3, Clark 1 — At Sierra Vista, Chris McCoy had 16 digs, 15 kills, three aces and two blocks to help the Mountain Lions top the Chargers, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-14.

Jordan Kirtley added 14 kills six digs and two blocks, and Joey Harvanek had 13 kills and five digs for Sierra Vista.

Clark’s Antonio Martinez had 25 assists and seven digs, and Alan Cruz notched eight digs, five kills and two blocks for the Chargers.

Valley 3, Liberty 1 — At Liberty, Marty Heavey had 25 kills and 10 digs to lead the Vikings to a 27-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15 victory over the Patriots.

Jared Marchello added 21 kills and nine digs, and Justin Sandoval had 46 assists for Valley.

Lucas Husli led Liberty with eight kills and seven blocks. Kenyon Oblad had 27 digs, and Hugo Hernandez added 17 assists for the Patriots.

Shadow Ridge 3, Silverado 0 — At Silverado, C.J. McInnis had 35 assists, nine digs and three blocks, and Brendan Harville added eight kills and four digs as the Mustangs swept the Skyhawks, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17.

Tanner Franklin put down 13 kills for Shadow Ridge.

Cody Steckel led Silverado with 23 assists and 17 digs. Taz Goon had 22 digs, and Devin Ross had nine kills for the Skyhawks.

Las Vegas 3, Canyon Springs 0 — At Las Vegas, Luis Wong had 23 assists to lead the Wildcats to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-12 sweep of the Pioneers.

Kyle Monton added 11 kills and four aces, and Shaun Kampshoff had 10 assists and six kills for Las Vegas, which got nine kills from Jonathan Sosa.
