Treven Clizbe, Arbor View move into first-place tie after win at Centennial

For three years, Southern Nevada volleyball teams have tried to stop Arbor View’s Treven Clizbe.

But as Northwest League rival Centennial learned on Wednesday, it has only gotten harder now that he’s a senior.

The 6-foot-5-inch outside hitter finished with 15 kills, five aces, five digs and four blocks to lead the fast-starting Aggies to a 25-18, 25-23, 25-20 road win over Centennial in a battle of top Sunset Region teams.

“He’s a dominant player,” said Arbor View coach John Gibbons, whose team moved into a first-place tie with Shadow Ridge with only two Northwest League matches remaining. “He’s a player who can take over a game, and he’s unselfish if we choose to go away from him.”

Clizbe, a first-team all-state performer last season, had seven kills, two aces and one block in the first set to lead the Aggies (27-8, 6-2 Northwest) to a seven-point set win. He scored five of Arbor View’s first eight points on kills, and served consecutive aces early in the match to help the team pull away.

“He’s just really good,” Gibbons said. “He gets over the block. He’s a matchup problem.”

Teammate Brenden Wagner, who had 16 kills, came on strong in the second set to help the Aggies overcome 11 ties and eight lead changes for a 25-23 win. Arbor View closed the set on a 3-1 run, with Wagner putting down two kills, including the set-winner from center court.

“Our kids focused on the next point,” Gibbons said. “So that really, really helped us. They weren’t looking ahead to anything. And our seniors really stepped up. At one point, we had five seniors on the court and they really came through.”

On Monday, the Aggies lost a two-set lead to Palo Verde, and they weren’t going to let it happen to Centennial.

Arbor View scored the final three points of the third set, and Clizbe served the match-winner after his ball clipped the net and rolled over for an ace.

“Monday helped us (tonight),” Gibbons said. “In volleyball, things don’t go your ways sometimes. But I think that did, mentally, help some of our kids. We have to learn to focus throughout the whole match.”

Carson Driscoll added four kills and 32 assists for Arbor View.

Kade Frischknecht led Centennial with 11 kills.

Antwaun Smith had eight kills, and Andrew Shiheiber dished out 26 assists for the Bulldogs (26-9, 5-3), who played without junior Sam Belnap, a 6-1 setter who sat with an undisclosed illness.
