Mustangs hold off Silverado for volleyball victory

On paper, Shadow Ridge won its volleyball match over Silverado on the road fairly easily.

But the Mustangs were close — albeit briefly — to allowing their opponent to extend it to five sets Thursday night.

After winning two of the first three sets, Shadow Ridge took an early lead in the fourth before Silverado started its comeback attempt. But with the help of their cheering section, those doubts were put to rest and the Skyhawks held on for a 25-16, 20-25, 25-12, 25-19 win.

“We had some young guys in there and I wanted to see them execute,” Shadow Ridge coach Luke Wilson said. “Especially in new roles or different spots.”

Shadow Ridge (9-3) easily won the first set, 25-16. But after dropping the second, the Mustangs were in danger of losing all momentum to Silverado (6-5).

They responded, however, with a dominant 25-12 third set before clinching the match in the fourth.

“They executed well and played in our system,” Wilson said. “There was no concern after that game. I just think we stopped doing our job. Especially on defense, so it was good to see them defensively step up.”

Derek Robnett led Shadow Ridge with 18 kills. Jordan Miller added 10 kills and 10 digs, and C.J. McInnis contributed 49 assists.

Jaden Keomaka led Silverado with 10 kills and six digs, and teammate Jaden Mohler dished out 24 assists.

As the Mustangs move forward in their season, there is one thing Wilson will take from Thursday night.

“Learning how to close out games,” he said. “That would definitely be the biggest thing from this game.”

In a competitive Northwest league, the Mustangs still have a lot to work on, according to their coach.

“As we move on, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing growth, especially from the younger kids,” Wilson said. “I’ve got some sophomores out there, I’ve got some juniors and I want to see them play together. I just want to see that executed a little bit better.”
