Tech’s Meyer wins UNLV Invitational

Tech senior Garrett Meyer topped a field of 109 runners Saturday to capture the boys race of the UNLV Invitational at Craig Ranch Park.

Meyer finished the 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 14.5 seconds.

James Hunt of the Australian Select team was second in 16:26.3. Justin Martinez of Santee (Calif.) was third in 16:50.5, just two seconds ahead of Desert Pines’ Abdirahman Mohamed.

Meyer’s effort helped the Roadrunners finish fourth in the team standings.

Santee won the event with 44 points. Clark, led by a fifth-place finish from Flimon Fre (16:52.8), was second with 63 points. The Australian team took third with 76, followed by Tech with 135.

Santee also won the girls team competition with 43 points. Australia was second with 45, followed by Cimarron-Memorial with 78 and Clark with 125.

Australia’s Sarah Marvin won the race in 20:01.1. Desert Pines’ Kenia Lopez was second in 20:48.6. Santee’s Jeniffer Perez was third in 20:50.7.
