Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sporting events.

CROSS COUNTRY

Friday — Southern Region meets at Craig Ranch Park, 10 a.m.

The Class 4A, 3A and 2A Southern Region meets will be held to determine who advances to state. The meet begins with the four Class 4A races, starting with the Sunrise Region boys at 10 a.m. The top three teams along with the top five individuals from non-qualifying teams from the Class 4A and 2A regions advance to state. The top four teams and top five individuals from non-qualifying teams move on to state in Class 3A.

FOOTBALL

Thursday — Chaparral at Cheyenne, 7 p.m.

The Desert Shields won a shootout over Sunrise Mountain, 52-49, in their regular-season finale to earn a home game in the Class 3A playoffs. Chaparral’s high-powered offense should make for an interesting contest.

Thursday — Liberty at Basic, 7 p.m.

Foothill’s upset of Basic means the Wolves enter this game with one league loss against the second-ranked Patriots, who are 4-0 in the Southeast League. Still, a Basic win would give the Wolves the league’s No. 1 seed for the Sunrise Region playoffs.

BOYS SOCCER

Tuesday — Canyon Springs at Rancho, 3 p.m.

Canyon Springs is looking to rebound after falling to Valley last wee. The Rams, meanwhile, need a win to stay in contention for the Northeast league title. Rancho can still pass Las Vegas, but needs to beat Canyon Springs on Tuesday to have a shot.

Tuesday — Sunrise Mountain at Mojave, 4 p.m.

The Rattlers represent the best chance to keep the Miners from an undefeated regular season. Sunrise Mountain has rocketed to the top of the coaches poll and has just two games left — against Mojave and then Thursday against Cheyenne, which is winless in league play. Mojave has been strong all year and won’t go down quietly.

GIRLS SOCCER

Monday — Desert Oasis at Bishop Gorman, 5:30 p.m.

The Gaels have lost only one time this season and it came at the hands of Desert Oasis. The rematch here is for the Southwest League title and some bragging rights heading into the playoffs.

Wednesday — Silverado at Green Valley, 6 p.m.

The Skyhawks won the previous meeting 1-0 on Oct. 5, so the host Gators will be looking for revenge. Green Valley also would like to lock up the No. 3 seed in the Southeast.

Thursday — Arbor View at Centennial, 3:30 p.m.

Will the Aggies remain undefeated for the regular season? This is their last test going into the playoffs, and Centennial has a lot to prove after its recent struggles.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Monday — Foothill at Coronado, 6 p.m.

Both teams are safely in the postseason, but the winner of this match will clinch the No. 3 seed from the Southeast League.

Tuesday — Palo Verde at Faith Lutheran, 6 p.m.

The Panthers and Faith Lutheran are tied in the Northwest League standings at 7-3 and will battle for the league’s No. 2 seed. Palo Verde won the first meeting in three sets.

Wednesday — Durango at Sierra Vista, 6 p.m.

The Trailblazers control their own fate in the Southwest League and would clinch the No. 2 seed with a victory over Sierra Vista.
