Kevin Legardy points way as No. 6 Canyon Springs shakes Cheyenne

Less than four minutes into the game Friday night, Canyon Springs boys basketball coach Freddie Banks found himself without senior point guard Christopher Hawkins, who picked up his second foul.

Fortunately for Banks and the Pioneers, senior guard Kevin Legardy was ready to pick up the slack.

Legardy scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half to lead No. 6 Canyon Springs to a 68-56 home win over No. 9 Cheyenne.

“Kevin shot the ball real well tonight,” Banks said. “He shot it open, and he was in a slump for the last five or six games. He did shoot the ball well tonight. ”

Cheyenne’s Kavon Williams threatened to steal control in the game’s opening minute when he had a steal and a slam for the game’s first points. But Legardy didn’t allow the Desert Shields to run with the momentum, as he scored the next eight points.

After Williams had given Cheyenne a 14-12 lead, Legardy answered with a 3-pointer from the left corner and the Pioneers wouldn’t trail again.

Banks said the team had to change its tactics once Hawkins picked up his second foul with 4:32 to go in the quarter.

“Once he got in foul trouble, we had to slow down a little bit more, because he’s my headquarters of my offense,” Banks said.

Canyon Springs (14-2) went to a variety of zone defenses in the second and third quarters, and Cheyenne (9-4) was unable to find an answer.

“We switched it up on them and they didn’t even know what was going on,” Banks said. “That’s what we have to do in games like these, playing in nonconference games, so we can see what we can do when our league gets back.”

Cheyenne shot 6-for-30 from the field (20 percent) in the second and third quarters as the Pioneers extended their lead to 59-36.

Hawkins scored all 11 of his points in the second half, and Jovon Coleman had 11 points and five rebounds for Canyon Springs. Legardy supplied four rebounds, three assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

Dewayne Alexander led Cheyenne with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Hahsonie Laushaul added 15 points and five rebounds.
