Canyon Springs boys stun Findlay Prep in overtime

Jordan Davis hit a short pull-up jumper in the lane with 15 seconds left in overtime Monday as host Canyon Springs stunned nationally-ranked Findlay Prep’s boys basketball team, 60-59.

The Pioneers trailed 58-56 in the overtime before Gregory Banks stole the ball and fed Davis for the tying layup.

After a free throw by Findlay Prep, Davis hit the go-ahead basket. The Pilots’ shot to win the game in the closing seconds hit the back of the rim.

“Our kids just played hard,” said Canyon Springs coach Freddie Banks, whose squad became the first public school team from Nevada to beat the Pilots, ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today. “It’s a real honor to beat Findlay Prep. Their kids are so strong. They have such a good program.”

The Pioneers (14-8) led 53-51 before Findlay Prep scored in the final 30 seconds to force overtime.

“The kids did not give up. They did not get down,” Freddie Banks said. “They believed in everything they did.”

Davis finished with 21 points, and Channel Banks added 18 points for Canyon Springs. D’Quan Crockett added 11 points for the Pioneers.

P.J. Washington had 16 points to lead Findlay Prep (19-2), whose lone previous loss to a Nevada team came last year against Bishop Gorman. The Pilots lost to Huber Heights Wayne (Ohio) on Jan. 19 and escaped with a 50-49 win over Gorman on Jan. 24.

Allonzo Trier had 13 points, and O’Shae Brissett scored 11 for Findlay Prep.

“I just let our kids know before the game that we have to be together,” Freddie Banks said. “We win together. We lose together. They played together tonight.”
