Bishop Gorman’s Christian Popoola commits to BYU

Bishop Gorman senior guard Christian Popoola made an oral commitment Wednesday to play at Brigham Young.

Popoola announced his decision via Twitter.

“Blessed to announce my commitment to Brigham Young University,” Popoola tweeted.

The 6-foot-4-inch point guard is a three-star prospect, according to ESPN.com. He reportedly had scholarship offers from more than a dozen schools, including San Diego State, Oklahoma and Southern Methodist.

“I think it’s a really good fit for Christian,” Gorman coach Grant Rice said. “He knows the staff very well up there. They’ve been recruiting him the hardest out of all the schools. And they made it clear to him that he was definitely one of the top guys on their priority list.”

Popoola helped the Gaels to their fifth consecutive boys state basketball title in February. He averaged 13.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists for Gorman.

“He’s a big-time, strong guard,” Rice said. “(He’s) physically gifted, super athletic and has really done a good job this summer. He’s played so much basketball this summer at the highest level, and has done a good job of becoming a true point guard.”

Popoola recently played in the adidas Nations event in Los Angeles, where he averaged 14.0 points and 4.0 rebounds for Team Africa.
