Here are the Review-Journal’s Spring Athletes of the Year
A look at the Athletes of the Year form the spring season (click on the logo to start a slideshow with photos of the athletes).
Baseball
Nick Quintana, Arbor View: The senior shortstop made the Division I All-Southern Nevada first team. Batted .449 with nine doubles, three triples, 15 homers and 58 RBIs. Drew 24 walks. Has signed with Arizona.
Boys Golf
Jack Trent, Palo Verde: The junior shot 5-under 139 to win the Division I state title for the second straight year. He finished tied for second in the Sunset Region tournament.
Softball
Sam Pochop, Rancho: The junior pitcher went 19-4 with a 0.51 ERA and 278 strikeouts and just 18 walks in 177-2/3 innings as the Rams advanced to the Division I state final. She also hit .387 with seven doubles and 20 RBIs.
Boys Swimming
Nick McDowell, Durango: The senior distance specialist swept the 200 and 500 freestyles at the Division I state meet. McDowell’s winning time in the 500 (4:27.04) is the fastest in state history and is well under the automatic All-America standard. He has signed with Purdue.
Girls Swimming
Abby Richter, Green Valley: Ranked as one of the nation’s top recruits for 2017, Richter lowered her own state record in the 100 backstroke (54.34) and set the mark in the 200 freestyle (1:48.05) at the Division I state meet. She recently made an oral commitment to Virginia.
Boys Track
Savon Scarver, Centennial: The junior set a Division I state meet record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 37.83 seconds, the best time in the state this season. Scarver also placed second in the 110 hurdles and the 200 and ran on the second-place 800 relay team to help the Bulldogs to a second-place team finish.
Girls Track
Jessica Ozoude, Spanish Springs: The junior dominated the sprints, winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes at the Division I state meet. Ozoude posted a time of 12.29 seconds in the 100, won the 200 in 24.29 and took the 400 in 55.35.
Boys Volleyball
Shilo Chow, Foothill: The senior setter was one of Southern Nevada’s most versatile players. He finished with 1,020 assists, 185 digs, 172 kills, 124 blocks and 72 aces in leading the Falcons to a state runner-up finish.
