BASEBALL: Gilbertson helps Gators edge top-ranked Basic

Matt Gilbertson tossed a five-hitter and drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning as host Green Valley defeated top-ranked Basic 2-1 on Wednesday.

A.J. Amelburu led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and went to second on a single by Jake Leonard.

Gilbertson, who was 2-for-3, singled to center, scoring Amelburu with the go-ahead run.

The Gators tied the score in the fifth when Frankie Fitzgerald doubled and came home on Jimmy Montiel’s sacrifice fly.

Gilbertson struck out three with one walk. Basic’s lone run came when Trent Bixby scored on a double play in the second inning.

Gilbertson and Amelburu each went 2-for-3, and Austin Primack was 2-for-2 for Green Valley.

Foothill 4, Eldorado 3 — At Eldorado, Trentin Price struck out the side with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the seventh inning as the Falcons held off the Sundevils.

Foothill led 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, but consecutive singles by Trevor Swain, Jason Demaria and Isaac Villanueva plated a run and chased Falcons starter Andrew Hauck.

Price entered and struck out the side, stranding runners at second and third.

Shay Landers was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs, and Kelton McCall went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI for Foothill.

Hauck allowed one earned run on nine hits with six strikeouts in six innings to get the win.

Swain went 2-for-4 with two runs, and Demaria was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Eldorado. Villanueva struck out 10 in six innings.

Silverado 9, Rancho 5 — At Rancho, Payton Ballard had two hits, two RBIs and a run as the Skyhawks rallied to top the Rams.

Blake Zorne went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Dax Fellows had an RBI triple and scored a run for Silverado, which scored six runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-4 lead.

Rancho’s Braulio Santiaguin went 2-for-3 with a run, and Jimmy Gamboa was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Rams.

Canyon Springs 2, Valley 1 — At Canyon Springs, Zack Gardner fired a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead the Pioneers over the Vikings.

Gardner walked three and allowed an unearned run in the sixth inning. He also had a two-run single in the bottom of the first to account for Canyon Springs’ runs.

Anthony Hicks added two hits for the Pioneers.

Valley’s Jacob Cruz went the distance, allowing eight hits, and also tripled.

Desert Pines 8, Virgin Valley 5 — At Desert Pines, the Jaguars scored five runs in the third inning to storm past the Bulldogs.

Raymond Minero allowed only two earned runs and struck out seven to earn the win. He also doubled.

Vasaifanua Hansell went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Desert Pines.

Jayden Perkins went 2-for-3 with a run to lead Virgin Valley.

Coronado 4, Las Vegas 1 — At Coronado, Kyle Hall was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Cougars over the Wildcats.

Hall also threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to get the save.

Winning pitcher Garett Lake allowed a run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Noah Hemphill went 2-for-3 with a double for Coronado.

Antonio Gaxiola was 2-for-2 for Las Vegas.

Boulder City 10, Tech 0 — At Boulder City, Austin Wishard was 2-for-2 with a home run, three runs and two RBIs to help the Eagles to a five-inning win over the Roadrunners.

Zach Murphy went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Boulder City. Peyton Koopman threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and a walk to get the win.

Chaparral 10, Moapa Valley 0 — At Overton, Mark O’Connor fired a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead the Cowboys past the Pirates in five innings.

Kevin Woolman went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, and Connor Jarvis added a double and two RBIs for Chaparral.

Del Sol 19, Sunrise Mountain 1 — At Del Sol, Zach Trujillo went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Cordell Bowie and Phil Talamo each had a two-run double as the Dragons routed the Miners in five innings.

Aaron Squires was 2-for-2, and winning pitcher Stanley Natale struck out eight in four innings of work.
