BASEBALL: Cruz, Valley snap 14-game losing streak with win over Canyon Springs

Winning pitcher Jacob Cruz singled home Demario Barnes with the winning run with one out to cap a three-run bottom of the seventh inning and lift Valley’s baseball team to a 6-5 victory over visiting Canyon Springs.

Barnes and David Trotta each went 2-for-3 for the Vikings, who led 3-0 before giving up five unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Cruz allowed 12 hits but went the distance to break the Vikings’ 14-game losing streak.

Giovani Benuto went 3-for-3, and Ryan Loy was 3-for-4 for the Pioneers.

Coronado 13, Las Vegas 7 — At Las Vegas, Jake McLean went 4-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBIs as the Cougars collected 18 hits and defeated the Wildcats.

Corben Bellamy was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Owen Hallett went 2-for-3 with a home run, a triple and two RBIs for Coronado. Noah Hemphill was 2-for-4 for Coronado, which had 10 extra-base hits.

Antonio Gaxiola was 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Las Vegas.

Silverado 7, Rancho 3 — At Silverado, the Skyhawks parlayed seven walks, a hit batsman and a single into six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past the Rams.

With a 3-1 lead, Rancho walked the bases loaded to start the bottom of the sixth before getting a line out and a force out at third. The next three Silverado hitters walked to give the Skyhawks a 4-3 lead. A hit batsman, a walk and Kevin Pindel’s RBI single made it 7-3.

Pindel was 2-for-2 for Silverado, which had just three hits, but drew 12 walks and had three batters hit by a pitch.

Joey Walls was 2-for-2 with a double and a run, and Layton Walls was 2-for-3 for Rancho.

Foothill 5, Eldorado 0 — At Foothill, Andrew Hauck threw a five-hitter as the Falcons beat the Sundevils.

Hauck walked two and struck out seven.

Noah Higgins went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI, and Jack Fredericksen went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for Foothill.

Isaac Villanueva was 2-for-3 for Eldorado.

Boulder City 3, Tech 1 — At Tech, Steve Wagner went the distance, scattering nine hits and three walks to earn the win, as the Eagles edged the Roadrunners.

Wagner struck out five.

Alec Mathis went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Austin Wishard was 2-for-3 with a run for Boulder City. Peyton Koopman went 2-for-4 with a double for the Eagles.

Tech’s Alexis Acosta was 2-for-3 with a run, and Jalen Birch went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Roadrunners.

Logan Campbell allowed 10 hits and struck out nine in seven innings for Tech.

Desert Pines 9, Virgin Valley 4 — At Mesquite, Juan Casteneda fired three-hitter with eight strikeouts and laced a two-run double to help the Jaguars top the Bulldogs.

Vasaifanua Hansell chipped in with a base hit, two walks, and three RBIs for Desert Pines, which rallied from a 2-0 deficit with five runs in the top of the fourth.

Chaparral 12, Moapa Valley 0 — At Chaparral, Mark O’Connor tossed a three-hitter and struck out six to lead the Cowboys by the Pirates in five innings.

Robert O’Connor went 3-for-4 with a double, and Mark O’Connor was 2-for-4 for Chaparral, which scored six runs in the first inning.

Del Sol 23, Sunrise Mountain 1 — At Sunrise Mountain, Phil Talamo went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs, and Dylan Aguirre was 4-for-5 with four RBIs as the Dragons slugged their way to a five-inning rout of the Miners.

Zach Trujillo went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, Isaiah Salazar was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Jorge Costa had a double and two RBIs for Del Sol, which scored 10 runs in the second inning.

Sisco Solis-Escojeda hit a double for Sunrise Mountain.
