BASEBALL: Basic clinches share of Sunrise League title

Ryne Nelson went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and two RBIs, and Basic’s baseball team secured a share of the Division I Sunrise League title with a 12-1 five-inning win over visiting Valley on Thursday.

J.J. Smith was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs for Basic, which will be the No. 1 seed for the Sunrise Region tournament that starts Tuesday.

Bryce Cowin was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and David Trotta was 1-for-2 with a double and a run for Valley.

Coronado 10, Rancho 8 — At Rancho, the Cougars scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to down the Rams.

Anthony Carro led off the eighth with a single to left field and moved to third base on a single by Kyle Hall. After Carro scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, Jake McLean singled up the middle, scoring Hall with the insurance run for Coronado.

Carro was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, and Garett Lake belted a two-run homer that tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning for Coronado. Hall earned the win in relief for the Cougars.

Anthony Becerra doubled twice, and teammates Zach Barnhart and Joey Walls each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Rancho.

Green Valley 7, Foothill 3 — At Green Valley, Matt Uran went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs to help the Gators top the Falcons.

Drake Maningo was 2-for-3 with a double, and A.J. Amelburu went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for Green Valley.

Shay Landers was 1-for-2 with a solo home run for Foothill.

Las Vegas 8, Canyon Springs 0 — At Canyon Springs, Austin Strong and Diego Delgado combined on a three-hitter to lead the Wildcats by the Pioneers.

Trey Chauncey was 2-for-4 with a home run, and Nathan Freimuth was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs for Las Vegas. Hector Perez was 3-for-4 with three runs for the Wildcats.

Zack Gardner went 2-for-2 for Canyon Springs.

Bonanza 4, Cimarron-Memorial 2 — At Cimarron, Torren Brozovich’s RBI single in the top of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Bengals by the Spartans in the conclusion of a game that was suspended last week due to rain.

With the teams tied at 2-2 after six innings when the game resumed, Bonanza loaded the bases on a hit batsman and consecutive singles by Jay DeSoto and Eric Schultz. Brozovich singled up the middle to plate Byron Naftzger with the go-ahead run, and Levi Klump followed with a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 4-2.

Schultz was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs, and DeSoto was 3-for-4 for the Bengals, who clinched the No. 6 seed in the Division I Sunset Region tournament.

Trevor Doyle and Noah Parker each went 2-for-4 for Cimarron.

Durango 5, Faith Lutheran 0 — At Faith Lutheran, Charles Smith tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts to lead the Trailblazers by the Crusaders.

Colin Marraco was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI for Durango.

Jake Koentopp and Robby Schwartz each went 1-for-3 for Faith Lutheran.

Chaparral 3, Tech 0 — At Chaparral, Mark O’Connor threw a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Cowboys edged the Roadrunners in a battle for second place in the Division I-A Sunrise League.

O’Connor walked just one.

Chris Sedillo went 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the fifth inning, and Robert O’Connor was 2-for-4 for Chaparral. The Cowboys took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by John Gencarrelli.

Chandler Gehring was 2-for-4, and Logan Campbell doubled for Tech.

Boulder City 8, Moapa Valley 6 — At Overton, Preston Van Diest went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, and Peyton Koopman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored as the Eagles held off the Pirates.

Alec Mathis and Austin Wishard each went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Jacob Hubel added a double and an RBI for Boulder City, which led 8-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Nolan Desantis and Michael Morelli each doubled for Boulder City, and teammate Kodey Rahr had two of the Eagles’ seven stolen bases.

Steve Wagner pitched six solid innings, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out six.

Talan McClure went 2-for-4 with a run to lead Moapa Valley. Chase Guesman had a double and two RBIs, and Osmany Cardenas drove in two runs for the Pirates.

Sierra Vista 9, Eldorado 5 — At Sierra Vista, Jhared Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a three-run double to lead the Mountain Lions by the Sundevils.

Four Sierra Vista pitchers combined on a five-hitter.

Desert Pines 14, Sunrise Mountain 1 — At Sunrise Mountain, Silverio Milian threw a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts and was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs to power the Jaguars by the Miners.

Raymond Minero went 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs for Desert Pines, which scored seven runs in the seventh inning.

Jace Weaver had an RBI single to score Donavan Hansen with Sunrise Mountain’s lone run.

Del Sol 5, Virgin Valley 2 — At Del Sol, Jorge Costa threw six solid innings, yielding four hits and striking out eight, to lift the Dragons over the Bulldogs.

Cordell Bowie and Zach Trujillo each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Del Sol, which used a four-run first inning to take control.

Christian Wallace was 2-for-3, and Aaron Squires earned the save with one inning of scoreless relief for the Dragons.

Dillan Fuqua had a solo home run for Virgin Valley.

Pahrump Valley 13, Cheyenne 3 — At Cheyenne, Bradah Costa threw a five-hitter with six strikeouts, and the Trojans cruised to a five-inning win over the Desert Shields in a game that was suspended last week due to rain.

Costa also doubled and had two RBIs, and teammate Parker Hart drove in two runs.

Willie Lucas tripled, and Brendan Ormiston doubled for Pahrump, which scored seven runs in the third inning.

Antonio Chavez had a double for Cheyenne.

Needles 15-18, Lake Mead 5-8 — At Heritage Park, Ryan Dunn went 2-for-3 with two runs in the opener and 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in the nightcap as the Mustangs swept the Eagles.

Mario Rabanales was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs for Needles in the opener.

Lake Mead’s Hunter Harris, Brenden Foster and Jared Regan all went 2-for-3 in the first game, and teammates Zack Brocker and Joseph Johnson each had two hits in the finale.
